This week in squirrels… From Sun Jul 19th to Sat Jul 25th

Summary

  • Sunday stream
    • I had a blast during this one. It was one of my slower streams, and it got extremely quiet at some points, but I kept it rolling. Not too long but a good one.
    • Sadly, it was the only stream of the week due to health and depression, but we are gonna get back on it.
  • A smol Kitty Hang
    • I got a nice Sunday lunch and hang, as I have said, these are crucial for my mental health lately.
  • Network KVM
    • My favorite mobile hotspot maker now has a cheap out-of-band KVM solution. I got one for the main server since it’s a pain in the butt when something happens that takes it offline (like the network issues a few weeks back) or other random issues.
    • This is even worse when I am away at the hospital or something. So I am going to experiment with this. It might also solve my VNC issues with Linux client and macOS servers.
  • I improved my journal/blog post times a lot, which is nice. Same with my weekly.
  • Backup migration finish
    • Just as mentioned before, breaking out more of my zfs pool into mounts to isolate important things like backups better, finished up this work and cleanup.
  • Back in at work all this week
    • Feels good even though I am trying to focus on a supportive role with some projects and doing some backlog of administrata.
  • NixOS testing and caching setup
    • While I am working on that tech debt, it’s time to bring back NixOS CI tests and have some workers to automate my daily updates.
    • I also set up a caching server finally. I am always looking for ways to decrease my impact and increase performance, so this new pull-through caching proxy will help a lot.
  • Gaming!
    • Yep! After a few months, I finally sat back down and beat Mina the Hollower. What a super fun game. I immediately jumped into a New Game+ but didn’t get exceptionally far into it and am not sure if I will get back into it. Still, 10/10 game, big recommend. Before I learned about all the toggles I felt the game was too punishing, but then I tweaked a few things and it was perfect for any skill level.
  • Health
    • Bloodwork looking good, but now we start new treatment.
    • Starting with a surprise lumbar puncture! A bonus 8 hours in the hospital for me! I also underestimated how high getting “only” the most metal of all chemotherpies would make me. Usually I would get spine chemo done alongside other big chemo. It took days for the stutters, shakes, and general high to clear up.
    • Had a big call with redacted. It looks like I am in for it, and by “it”, I mean a lot of Utah travel I don’t want.
    • I am now on the phone half the day setting all this up. What is more fun than out of state hospital care than all the prepwork and calls?
    • I am struggling with sleep. I keep falling asleep early and then waking up feeling unrested. It’s plaging me a lot.
  • Spend was also messy this week.
    • Ordering in costs a FORTUNE now, easily 40-50 dollars to feed a single person. It’s not worth it, but I have some bad habits I have to drop, especially when it’s combined with some oppressive heat and an empty fridge.
  • I really wish Grammarly didn’t change their UX every week.
    • I use Grammarly to give me a once-over proofreading and to fix all the small errors in one go. Some weeks I can tap return repeatedly while reviewing the next change being selected. Sometimes I have to click instead. Sometimes the corrections are over the text. Sometimes the corrections are in the sidebar. Sure do miss Grammarly Pre-AI when I could expect what my experience was like week to week.

Books

  • The Gate of the Feral Gods ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • This one brings back more of the fun and brings back less of the confusion. Overall a great time.

Music

  • “A City Drowned in God’s Black Tears” by Infinity Knives & Brian Ennals
    • Holy CRAP this album goes hard. So hard, and I have been stuck on it.
  • XxGlitchBbyxX by Cynthoni & Projekt Melody
    • A new single from these two! I adore the EP that they did together, and this new single has brought that obsession back
  • Tweaker
    • Dark & weird. I have been up and down the albums for this all week—still one of my favorites.
  • Front Line Assembly
    • Yep, if I am going to take it back to Tweaker, then what else DARKNESS do I love? One of my all-time favorite acts. Front Line Assembly. I have mostly been in the super old serial killer stuff.
